SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON AUGUST 17TH 5-8PM

Kate Rose Johnson was introduced to her love of nature by her Grandmother Dorothy. Walking along the elevated wooden boardwalks and breathing in the richly sour marshlands of the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, she witnessed the responsibility we have to protect our wild spaces. The refuge nourished a feeling of peace, a sense of belonging and a lifelong belief in womenpower. At a pivotal time in her early adulthood, Kate moved to Seattle for sisterhood, the endless Pacific, towering peaks, and a lingering sense of the (yet) untamed. Kate loves celebrating these wild spaces that remain here, communing with them, witnessing them persist. For her, making art underscores the importance of supporting those who protect the wild that exists in all of us — and fighting those who work to eradicate it.

Cascadia Art Museum // Native American Modern

190 Sunset Ave, open Wednesday - Sunday, 11-5pm

This exhibition is the first to center around the art of Julius “Land Elk” Twohy (Two-vy-nah-auche) (1902 – 1986) and his local contemporaries. One of the region’s earlier modernists, he was best known for his  paintings and prints created in Seattle through the Federal Art Projects of the 1930’s and 40’s. Twohy, (Ute) and his younger contemporary, Delbert J. McBride (Cowlitz/Quinault 1920-1998), produced fascinating art and objects utilizing modern and abstract designs inspired by their Native American heritage. Their works will be displayed alongside non-native contemporaries such as Worth D. Griffin (1893-1981), R. Bruce Inverarity (1909–1999) and others who were highly influenced by Northwest indigenous design aesthetics and culture. These artists worked side by side during their lifetime and received acclaim in their own individual fields.

Where Art Meets Science: A Collection of Vintage Travel Bars and Original Encaustic Artwork.

The Artist & Curator, Kim Parsley, has combined her passions for finding a new life for old things, elevating great design, and renewing the enjoyment of creating cocktails (spirit-free or spirit forward) into her vintage travel bars; affectionately named The Happy Travelers. Each Happy Traveler is designed around a wine experience or a specific cocktail and includes all the bottles, bar tools, and glassware needed for the creation and enjoyment of that cocktail. Because most items are vintage or second-hand, each travel bar is one-of-a-kind, creating a renewed purpose to items that would otherwise sit on a shelf or in a landfill.

Kim also brings together art and science in creating her original encaustic artwork, in which she uses liquid beeswax to express the unique juxtaposition of places or textures and objects that are otherwise not connected to each other.

At this showing, Kim will have a collection of her vintage travel bars for sale or to inspire, as well as a selection of her encaustic paintings. Stop by during the art walk to speak to Kim about curating a custom travel bar set-up that has a personal connection to you or a gift recipient.
