Cascadia Art Museum // Matej Anzin

190 Sunset Ave, open Wednesday - Sunday, 11-5pm
SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON OCTOBER 16TH 5-8PM

Matej Anzin was born in 1979 in Slovenia which was at the time under the communist regime of the former Yugoslavia. He started drawing and painting at an early age. In his teenage years he attended local art workshops and was part of group exhibitions. He became a scholar of Slovenian late masters of Impressionism he admired dearly. That is what shaped his own style of painting and the perception of arts in general.

He graduated from Industrial Design in Slovenia and a couple of years later migrated to California where he continued pursuing his art. Now he resides in rural Issaquah where he creates his work and draws inspiration from the picturesque PNW (as he describes it). The PNW reminds him of his home country, and he remains loyal to various techniques of Impressionism, often bordering on Expressionism.

Impressionism pushed him to explore painting techniques further pushing boundaries of color tones and brush strokes, even spatula use to achieve his very own personal interpretation of the subject, creating a range of styles from realistic portrayals of the subject to impressionistic and abstract even. He found the entire color spectrum inside expressionism that usually a pair of eyes misses because it isolates the color spectrum to the most prevalent tones, to present the viewer with a definitive form and shape, but Matej wants to show us all that there is much more light in every subject than what it appears at first glance. He is a firm believer that his work, full of colors and texture, is only properly experienced in person.

Drake Nailon is a local photographer and artist behind AutoFocusArts, born in Seattle and considers the Puget Sound area his home. Having a lifelong passion for all things automotive that has shaped the direction his art has taken. Compelled to capture the often-overlooked details and passion hidden in plain sight, Drake finds beauty in the curves and shapes that create reflection and capture your attention and imagination. His photos draw the eye to the subtle details that even the owners of these automobiles sometimes miss. His work spans a variety of mediums, such as photography, acrylics, watercolor, and collage. He believes that working in a single medium is restrictive to his artistic process, each idea manifesting in its own individual style. Drake playfully refers to his subjects as rolling sculpture, his work, automotive portraiture, his eye drawn to hidden detail, to the reflection and form found within the automobile. Drake passion is capturing something unusual and sharing it with the viewer.

Her style has been described as “simplified surrealism” and her work is characterized by vivid color and imagery that is just a little out of the ordinary from what you might expect. As an artist, Elisabeth believes that creating by hand keeps us more in touch with our humanity, and taking care of nature is a duty in our shared human nature, if we are so courageous to be stewards of this planet we all share.

With a degree in Global Sustainability from Central Washington University, Elisabeth’s lifelong love for art has also been reignited by moving to Edmonds in 2018 and being inspired to create by painting and immersing in visual art again. This series offers a playful and freer version of her work, where color creates movement and texture on the canvas, and gives a view through the lens of perceived imperfections to see how everything in the natural world seems to be perfectly designed.

SEE ART DURING THIRD THURSDAY ART WALK ON OCTOBER 16TH 5-8PM ONLY

She holds a degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, where she honed her skills in creating seasonal collections and staying on top of trends—concepts that have translated into the way she approaches pottery today. Though she didn't always know pottery was her calling, Helena knew being an artist was. After creating her first painter’s palette, she realized how special it felt to make functional art for other artists. Since then, her mission has been to give back to the creative community and provide artists with something beautiful and functional. Even her homeware collection appeals to those with an artistic eye.

Photo HQ // Nathan MacDonald, Brendan Griffin, Anthony Huss & Andrew Brummitt

186 Sunset Ave, open Monday - Friday 9am-5:30pm, Saturday 10am-4pm
SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON OCTOBER 16TH 5-8PM

Nathan MacDonald fell in love with photography when he got his first disposable camera in middle school. Since then, he has captured photos across the world, aiming to capture expansive landscape photos along with the intriguing and sometimes subtle moments of everyday life.
Last year, he rekindled his passion for film photography and usually has his Nikon F4 camera in tow. His displayed work primarily features film photographs that showcase some of his favorite locations across the Western United States. He wants his work to reflect not only his skills but his deep appreciation for the beauty of the world, inviting viewers to experience his journey through his lens.

Brendan Griffin is a Seattle based photographer. Growing up he had access to a lot of SLR cameras, and while he has training in digital editing, he prefers the look and feel of shooting on film. Within the past year he has traveled, hiked, and camped in several areas around the northwest trying to take photos of the environment.

For more than 50 years, Anthony Huss has carried a camera as both a companion and a way of seeing the world. Whether working as photographer and marketing specialist at Art by Fire Glass in Issaquah or wandering with a camera in hand during his free time, he treats photography as an ongoing conversation with light, texture, and memory. He utilizes both digital and analog film, color and monotone, drawn to the unique character each brings to an image. His images reflect a curiosity about the world and a love of storytelling – allowing the viewer to determine meaning and truth. His photographs have found homes in local art expos, on the walls of coffee shops, in City
Times Magazine, local Seattle newspapers in advertising and articles, and even the Williams Sonoma Christmas catalog. When not behind the lens, Anthony paints, cooks, and stays active – always looking for new ways to explore creativity.

Andrew Brummitt is an Edmonds based photographer specializing in Black and White film. He typically enjoys shooting urban, landscape and portraiture.  His images often include simple compositions but utilize patterns and stark contrast to capture his vision. Andrew’s interest in film photography began in my last quarter of college, where he had the privilege to take a film photography class, where he fell in love with the medium and hasn't looked back since.  This series of images is from a trip he took to Hawaii shortly after graduation — there he took some of his favorite photos to date and began to discover what kind of photography he wanted to create.
